LAURENCE MARTIN PIERCE

Born in New York City, he began his formal art training in Manhattan at the High School of Art and Design, where he majored in photography and illustration.

In 1973, Mr. Pierce attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he majored in painting, sculpture and photography. During that time, he was privileged to study with such notable artists as Louise Bourgeois, Jennifer Bartlett, Hannah Wilke, Paul Waldman and Jonathan Borofsky. He graduated with a BFA degree in 1977. He continued to paint and sculpt during that time, and also did independent study at The Art Students League in New York.

Since moving to Boston, Mr. Pierce joined the Boston Afro American Arts Association (BAAAA), and has exhibited with them in shows throughout New England, including their annual Art in the Park show in Copley Square.

He has had numerous one-man shows in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, and with the artists of BAAAA, participated in Carol Carter’s arts-for-youth program, “Splashes of Color”.

He was also co-founder of the now defunct Boston Metropolitan Arts Guild (BMAG) and is currently president and founder of the African Winter Gallery in Dorchester, MA.
